Serving Our Portland Neighbors Since 1961

Located about five miles northeast of Corpus Christi across the Nueces and Corpus Christi Bays Portland, Texas, is a thriving Gulf Coast community that’s considered the gateway to Corpus Christi and points south. Located in San Patricio County, Portland is officially known as the “Gem City of the Gulf Coast.” With a current estimated population of 17,000, Portland, TX, covers an area of approximately 10 square miles.

Originally purchased by John G. Willacy in 1891, the young city of Portland began a steady growth, its population swelling to 500 within two years. Throughout its early history, the city experienced a few economic booms followed by downturns – the first downward spiral resulting from the nationwide depression known as “The Panic of 1893” and the others following the city’s destruction by hurricanes in 1916 and 1919. The city gradually recovered from these catastrophes, and by 1940, its population had grown to 1,200. Incorporated in 1949, the city soon built its own industrial complex, which led to steady economic and population growth. Today, Portland, TX, has taken its place as one of the beautiful bedroom communities of the Corpus Christi area.

Today, the city’s strategic location on two bays affords area residents and visitors ample opportunities to enjoy boating, fishing, and other water sports. For those who prefer to stay a bit further inland, while availing themselves of lake fishing and other lakeside activities, the area also features Indian Point Park, complete with fishing pier and wade-in beach, and Sunset Lake Park, a natural wetlands habitat that also offers a hiking-biking trail. Both parks also feature excellent bird-watching and bird-feeding opportunities, since the area comprises an ideal bird-nesting habitat. In fact, Indian Point Wetlands is designated as site #73 on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Site #74, the Fred Jones Bird Sanctuary, is also located in this area. Other area parks include Violet Andrews Park, a wildlife preserve that also offers hiking/biking trails, along with kite surfing – all in a lush botanical paradise.

Local golfers will love the benefits they’ll enjoy when they become members of the North Shore Country Club. Considered “THE premier golf course in the Texas Coastal Bend area,” the club offers a Championship links-style course with a breathtaking view of Corpus Christi Bay providing the serenest of backdrops. Visitors to the area who enjoy playing a round of golf will find a number of public golf courses in nearby Corpus Christi, including the Gabe Lozano Senior Golf Course and the Oso Beach Municipal Golf Course.
Portland also offers other forms of recreation, including a community center, a skate park, and an aquatic center, as well as a municipal park and pavilion, both of which can accommodate picnics and BBQs.

Boasting a temperate climate and average weather conditions that fall somewhere between humid-subtropical and semi-arid, Portland, Texas, is considered an excellent spot for summer or winter vacations. Since May and September are peak rainfall months, the area’s hot summers and mild winters are even more appropriate for that visit you may be considering.
