How to Prevent Water Damage While You’re Away
When you leave your Rockport, Texas home for a vacation or extended trip, you want to be sure your residence is safe from unexpected disaster. Unfortunately, water-related accidents can occur while you’re away. Flooding in your home can cause serious damage to belongings and the home’s structure. Before leaving, you can take steps to prevent water damage and ensure your home will be safe and whole when you return.
Preventing Water Damage
Before you leave home, go room to room and make the necessary checks:
Locate and turn off the main water supply valve that controls water entering your home. When no water is coming in, there’s no chance that a broken pipe or leaky appliance can cause water damage. Turn on faucets before you leave to clear any existing water from the pipe system.
Turn off individual appliances and fixtures. If you have to leave your main water supply on while you’re away (if your home is being cared for by a friend, for example), turn off the water supply to individual appliances and plumbing fixtures that won’t be used during your absence, including sinks, toilets, dishwashers, washing machines and water heaters.
Check for existing leak. If there are already leaks in your plumbing system, they could get worse while you’re away. Fix any known leaks before leaving. Replace plastic supply pipes with stainless steel. Do a quick check for new leaks or have your damage prevention professional give your system a maintenance inspection.
Clear the gutters. The gutters that carry rainwater off your roof can be a source of major water damage if they overflow. Make sure the gutters are clear of debris and blockages and that water can easily flow off the roof. Leaky roofs, packed gutters, and poor drainage can all result in damage to your home and foundation.
