Maintaining your home’s energy efficiency does more than just save you money; it also helps maintain your family’s comfort. There many ways to do this, including sealing duct leaks, keeping up with regular maintenance or installing a programmable thermostat. However, one of the most important things is to have a modern unit with the right A/C features.

Today’s systems come with a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER), which tells you in a relative way how efficient the unit is when using energy. However, beyond the SEER rating, there are number of other important and optional A/C features that you need to consider.

  • Thermal expansion valve — A thermal expansion valve, or TXV, is a device that ensures that the pressure of the refrigerant in the condenser coils automatically adjusts itself at times when temperatures are extremely high.
  • Variable speed air handling — One of the most important A/C features you’ll want for your air handling unit is variable speed. This lets the unit adjust the amount of air that it pumps through your home based on your cooling needs.
  • Fan operation — A great way to save energy is to have an A/C unit with the ability to operate in fan-only mode. Since this means the compressor won’t be operating at these times, you can save a lot on your energy bill.
  • Delay switch — This feature causes the fan to continue operating for a few minutes after the compressor has shut down.
  • Sound reduction — One of the problems with older units is that they often make a lot of noise whenever they turn on or off. This means that one of the A/C features you should look for is quiet operation.
  • System alerts — You should look for a system that incorporates warning lights to alert you whenever there’s an issue that needs to be addressed.

The key to getting maximum efficiency out of your unit is to look for the right A/C features. If you have any questions about this, please contact Bodine-Scott Air Conditioning. We’ve served the Corpus Christi area since 1961 and will be happy to help you.
