indoor air pollutionIndoor air pollution plagues many homeowners in Corpus Christi. It’s a natural part of many home activities; cooking, cleaning and especially pets, all create a drag on indoor air quality. But you can boost your healthy IAQ with a little bit of diligence and these quick tips.

  • Make sure your home is well ventilated. Indoor air tends to be more polluted than outdoor air because the pollutants have nowhere to go. To keep them from concentrating between your four walls, make sure you’re exhausting old air and bringing in fresh air.
  • Change the air filter regularly. The central air system moves air within your home, and the filter is the first line of defense against airborne particulates. Check the operating manual to determine the most efficient filter the system can support.
  • Consider adding houseplants to your home. Green flowering plants not only provide a visual boost to your home; they also improve indoor air quality. Ask pros at a local nursery what good, low-maintenance plants would work best for you. Just remember not to saturate the soil to the point that bacteria has a place to grow.
  • Purchase a whole-house air cleaner. While the air filter provides a good start for air cleaning, it isn’t rated to improve the air of your entire home. The filter’s primary purpose is to ensure that the air entering the system isn’t so dirty that the heating and cooling equipment can’t operate effectively. A whole-house air cleaner will work in conjunction with your central air system to deliver clean air through your home.
  • Have your home’s ducts cleaned. Dust that hides in your ductwork can be blown out of the vents and into your air, even after the air has been filtered. Get rid of the dust to make sure that it’s not re-introduced to your air.
